You begin the sanctuary trail by a visit around the world heritage sites in Kathmandu, Pashupatinath temple, Swoyambhunath stupa, Bouddhanath stupa, and Durbar Squares in Bhaktapur and Patan.

Your actual sanctuary trek starts from Nayapul after you make your way past subtropical forests. The forests are replaced by terraced paddy fields that stretches as far as the eye can see. And in the distant backdrop, you witness the snow peak mountains.

In this trail, you get to meet different ethnic groups, from the Magars to Thakalis to Gurung and to the Tibetan people that call their home here. Annapurna Sanctuary trek is a journey to the South face of Annapurna I. The subtropical forests and the paddy fields gradually turn to fields of rhododendron.

The south facing slopes are covered in dense rhododendron and bamboo forests and is usually damp with the clouds hanging low. While the north-facing slopes that fall in the Annapurna’s rain shadow region have drier climate.

People travelling to Nepal usually confuse the Sanctuary trekking with the other two famous Annapurna Circuit and Annapurna Base Camp trek. While some places do overlap, the Sanctuary trail is relatively shorter.

The altitude gains are quicker here, rising from Pokhara at 940m to Annapurna Base Camp at 4,130m in just 5-6 days. You also do not require to cross any high passes.

This trek allows you to get up close and personal to the mountains without exerting yourself physically. The trail meanders through rhododendron forests and bamboo groves, leading you through the cobbled steps of the beautiful Ghandruk village. This village is one of the main stops before the Annapurna Trekking, and the views of Annapurna range, Machhapuchhre, and Himchuli range are spectacular from here. Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek is not only a short trek but undoubtedly one of the most intensely scenic treks there is.

The trek can be completed in three days, but most of the itineraries are designed for you to complete the trek in a total of 5 or 6 days. This gives you enough time to rest and immerse yourself in the local lifestyle.

Poon Hill Trek Trail Overview

Your trek starts from Nayapul and then you gradually make your ascent up to Ghandruk village. The first day of the trek is slightly challenging, where you walk on a gradual incline for up to 5 or 6 hours till you reach Tikhedhunga. All your fatigue and endeavor will be worth it, though, as you reach the village. You will find many trekkers on their way to mountain treks or fellow short travelers. You can exchange your trekking stories here as you gather around the campfire with the sun dimming past the mountains on the horizon.

The trek from Tikhedhunga to Ghandruk does get easier the following day. This is the day where you get a change of scenery as the landscape changes from terraced fields to magical coniferous forests, with monkey groups passing through and some grazing village horses. The early morning sunlight peeking in through the canopy is simply exhilarating and gives you invigorating energy to start your day. The trail then winds along through dense mossy waterfalls, bamboo groves, rhododendron fields until finally heading westward towards Ghandruk.

Ghandruk Village Highlights

Ghandruk is a picturesque village consisting of around 1,200 individual households, largely occupied by the Gurung people. The Gurungs are the ethnic people of Nepal who largely makeup the members of the world-famous and ferocious Gurkha regiment. Here, you can enjoy the local langur monkey meat, if you want to spice up your palette. While most of the surrounding villages are sparsely populated, owing to large migration to the city or abroad, this village is still bustling alive.

Ghandruk village will make you want to stay longer, but as they say, the show must go on. After a fulfilling rest, you head towards the very heart of the Annapurna range by following the steep path of Modi Khola to altitudes of 3,200m to finally reach Poon Hill.

The Gokyo valley is made up of six fresh bodies of water, located at an altitude of more than 4,700m to 5,000m. Gokyo Ri (5357m)

Gokyo Peak, or known locally as Gokyo Ri is a 5,357 m (17,575 ft)-high peak in the Khumbu region located on the west side of the Ngozumpa glacier.

Annapurna Circuit Trek has long been praised by travellers as the holy grail of trekking since it was first opened to foreigners in 1977. This 200km plus trail that circles the heavenly Annapurna range has often been voted as the best long distance trek in the world because it combines a wide variety of climate zones from the tropics at 600m to the arctic zones located at 5000m above.

Annapurna Circuit Trail

This trail also takes you through a wide cultural variety from villages, at Terai region to the higher altitude Tibetan culture of Manang and through the formidable Thorong Phedi.

The trail passes through subtropical forests, terraced paddy fields, several waterfalls cascading down stone cliffs.

It is hard not to see the reason why travellers are often confused between Annapurna Circuit and Annapurna Base Camp trek. Both trail gives you awe-inspiring views of Annapurna range, Hiunchuli and Machhapuchhre, and hikers will come across Gurung villages. But that is where the similarities end.

As the name suggests, the goal of the Annapurna Circuit is to complete a loop. The trail starts and ends in Taal and is a relatively more strenuous trek than that of the base camp.

The AC’s landscape changes drastically in a comparatively short span of time- from the green cultivated land in the south side of the Himalaya to the arid rocky desert of Mustang that falls on the Annapurna’s rain shadow region. The trail also leads you towards Muktinath, a revered pilgrimage site of Hindus and Buddhists.

Crossing Thorong La Pass – Difficulty of Annapurna Circuit Trek

This expedition takes you across two river valleys and then to the formidable Thorong La Pass. Touching the edge of the Tibetan plateau at an altitude of about 5,400m/17,760ft, Thorong La Pass is the highest point in your expedition and is one of the greatest challenges you will ever encounter.

Most travellers take the anti-clockwise route as this way the altitude gain is gradual and crossing the pass is safer. Most trekkers feel the effects of this taxing endeavor and so it is very important to acclimatize at Manang to prepare you for your journey.

Taking on this expedition during the winters might prove difficult as the mountain passes are often blocked by snow.

Trekking on Off-Season

Trekking in the rainy season from July to September is encouraged if you want to avoid the crowds in the summer months. However, your views are mostly obscured by low clouds. There is no need to worry about rain so much as the arid landscape of Mustang and Manang fall under the rain-shadow region of the surrounding Annapurna range.
